Which mattress for back pain? The honest guide

Do you wake up stiffer in the morning than when you went to bed in the evening? This is rarely due to age and often due to the mattress. A worn out or too soft mattress forces your spine into an unnatural curve, which your muscles have to compensate for all night long. The result: tension, back pain, poor sleep.

This guide tells you what matters when choosing a mattress for back pain. Without advertising jargon and without claiming to replace a medical diagnosis.

How your mattress affects your back

When lying down, your spine should maintain the same natural double S-shape as when standing. A mattress that is too firm pushes your shoulders and hips upwards, while a mattress that is too soft causes your pelvis to sag. Both cause the same effect over hours: your back muscles compensate instead of recovering.

A good mattress for back pain fulfills three tasks simultaneously:

  • Relieve pressure points, especially on shoulders and hips
  • Keep spine straight through ergonomically adapted lying zones
  • Adapt to sleeping position and body weight. What's right for you might be wrong for your partner

The 3 most common mattress mistakes for back pain

1. "The harder, the better." Wrong.

A common myth. A mattress that is too firm does not relieve your shoulder sufficiently, you will change your sleeping position more often at night and still wake up tense in the morning. The right firmness depends on your weight, your sleeping position and your personal preference.

2. An old mattress "still works".

Mattresses lose their support over the years. After 8 to 10 years at the latest, a mattress is fatigued. If you see pressure marks or lying down feels hard and uneven, the mattress is the most likely cause of your back pain.

3. Slatted frame and mattress don't match.

A 7-zone mattress on a rigid, unadjusted slatted frame loses its effectiveness. Both must be coordinated. Our slatted frames are precisely designed for BeSports mattresses.

Which firmness for which complaint?

The following table is a guide, not a law of nature. Those who are sensitive often do better with a softer firmness than the table suggests.

Body weight Firmness recommendation
up to 60 kg H1 to H2 (soft to medium-soft)
60 to 80 kg H2 to H3 (medium-soft to medium)
80 to 100 kg H3 to H4 (medium to firm)
over 100 kg H4 to H5 (firm to extra firm)

For acute back pain, a mattress with two firmness levels is often worthwhile. You can switch sides depending on your daily condition. The HERO mattress offers exactly that.

Why 7-zone mattresses are ergonomic

A 7-zone mattress is not divided into 7 equally firm areas, on the contrary. The shoulder and hip areas are designed to be softer so that these wider body regions can sink deeper. The lumbar area and knees are firmer to support the spine.

The result: your spine remains straight in side sleeping as well as in back sleeping, without you having to consciously control it. More on this in our detailed article 7-Zone Mattress: Pros and Cons.

Sleeping position and suitable mattress

Side sleepers

Need a mattress that yields in the shoulder and hip area. Mattresses that are too firm lead to pain in the shoulder and arm because circulation is constricted. Recommendation: Cold foam mattress with a pronounced shoulder zone.

Back sleepers

Benefit from medium firmness and pronounced lumbar support. A mattress that is too soft allows the pelvis to sag, while a mattress that is too firm creates a hollow space under the lumbar region.

Stomach sleepers

Need firmer mattresses so that the pelvis does not sink too deeply, which would create a hollow back. Stomach sleepers should also pay attention to a flat pillow.

When to see a doctor, when to get a new mattress?

If your back pain lasts longer than two weeks, radiates into your leg or arm, or is accompanied by numbness, it belongs in medical hands. No mattress replaces a diagnosis.

For dull, morning tension that improves during the day, the mattress check is worthwhile first. An ergonomic 7-zone mattress with appropriate firmness can often significantly improve the problem within a few weeks.

Risk-free testing instead of blind buying

You can test any BeSports mattress for 30 nights at home. A 5-minute lie-down test in a furniture store is no basis for a decision that will accompany you for the next 8 years. Take your time to look at our mattress selection, and ask us if you are unsure about firmness or material.
