Disposing of an Old Mattress: 4 Ways Compared

Alte Matratze entsorgen: die 4 Wege im Vergleich
- 3 Read minutes

The old mattress doesn't belong in general waste or next to the container in bulky waste bags. There are four clean ways to dispose of it, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Here's an honest overview, so you don't get bogged down in municipal waste regulations.

Method 1: Municipal Bulky Waste Collection

How it works: Register for a bulky waste collection appointment online with your local waste management company. On the scheduled day, place the mattress outside your door in the morning.

Pros Cons
Free in most cities (1 to 2 times per year included) Appointment wait times often 2 to 6 weeks
No trip to the recycling center Mattress may sit on the street for several hours, risk of theft (very rare)
Can also be used for several large items at once Some cities require several weeks' advance notice

Recommendation: The standard method for 90% of cases. Especially if your new mattress isn't being delivered for a few weeks, the bulky waste appointment often fits perfectly in between.

Method 2: Recycling Center / Waste Disposal Site

How it works: Put the mattress in your car, drive to the nearest recycling center, and drop it off.

Pros Cons
Immediately gone, no waiting for an appointment You need a car / trailer / van
Free for household quantities in many cities Some centers charge a fee (€5 to €15 per mattress)
You know immediately that it's disposed of Opening hours often limited (weekdays only, Saturday mornings)

Recommendation: If you have a car anyway and want the mattress gone immediately, this is the quickest way.

Method 3: Recycling Specialist

How it works: There are specialized providers who collect mattresses and recycle their materials (steel springs → scrap metal, foam → new upholstery). Examples: regional mattress recyclers, often arranged through municipal utilities upon request.

Pros Cons
Highest recycling rate, materials are actually reused Rarely free (€10 to €30 per mattress)
Often pickup without needing a car Not available in every region
Clear environmental balance Appointment lead time similar to bulky waste

Recommendation: If the ecological aspect is important to you and you're willing to pay a small premium.

Method 4: Exchange when buying new

How it works: Ask the manufacturer or retailer of your new mattress if they will take the old one with them upon delivery. Many providers now offer this, some for free, some for a small fee.

Pros Cons
Zero-effort: old out, new in, all in one appointment Not all providers offer this
Often free or for a small fee Assumes the old mattress is still transportable (not soaked, not heavily molded)
You don't have to worry about anything Sometimes only available in conjunction with a premium service package

Recommendation: Just ask when ordering. The answer is usually "yes, for a fee X", and that's often cheaper than driving to the recycling center yourself, especially without your own car.

What do things cost on average?

Method Typical Costs
Bulky Waste Collection €0 (within standard quota)
Recycling Center €0 to €15
Recycling Specialist €10 to €30
Exchange when buying new €0 to €25

Important: what not to do

  • General Waste Bin: A mattress won't fit and isn't allowed in there.
  • Container Sites / Bulky Waste Collection Points: Illegal dumping, fines possible.
  • Forest, field, parking lot: self-explanatory.

Special case: moldy or soaked mattress

A visibly moldy or permanently soaked mattress is considered special waste by many recycling centers and is often excluded from bulky waste collection. In this case: call the recycling center and ask, or commission a recycling specialist who also accepts contaminated mattresses.

Before you dispose: is it really at the end of its life?

A mattress's materials are fatigued after 8 to 10 years. If yours is younger and only has a few pressure points or a smelly cover, a new topper or a removable cover can extend its life by 2 to 3 years. More on this in our article Which mattress is the right one.
